On Thursday night (27 May 2010), the 2010 JD International Music Awards were held at NSW Government House.
Australia's richest music award is given in three categories, best song, best movie theme and best instrumental and it was Avoca Beach resident and Latitude 33 creator Yantra de Vilder who took out the instrumental category from about 1000 entries across the nation and the world.
Asked how she felt after receiving her award , de Vilder said, 'I feel honored and privileged to be chosen from amongst some of Australia's finest composers!' De Vilder won for her composition for piano and oboe called 'Reflections'.
Yantra has broad experience composing music for film, TV and theatre. Recently she has been composing for the BBC on a range of projects in Burma, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
A seasoned live performer, Yantra has played her original compositions at the Sydney Opera House, Adelaide Festival Centre and Melbourne’s Universal Theatre. She has worked on a variety of stages, ranging from solo piano recitals, to circus, theatre, dance, festivals, the Sydney Olympic Games, and performances with the likes of Do Re Mi, Deborah Conway, Robyn Archer, David Helfgott and Stephen Cummings, to name but a few.
At the moment Yantra is working on her original multi-media theatrical performance, Latitude 33, linking the musical cultures of Australia, South Africa and South America, of which she is the composer and creative director. Yantra de Vilder's Latitude 33 is a theatrical performance utilising the latest multi-media technologies, weaving a tale as old as Time, yet as modern as the collective dreamings of our global Future.
Internationally award winning composer and creator of Latitude 33, Yantra de Vilder sits at her grand piano accompanying her exciting soundtrack featuring performances from a diversity of musicians from Australia, Chile and South Africa. Around her, dancers who have worked with Bangarra Dance Theatre, Legs on The Wall and The Australian Ballet express their exquisite craft; visual producer Andrew Worboys creates state of the art computer graphics and combines this with footage from Emmy and Gold award winning cinematographers David Hannon and David Warth to create a spectacular screen experience; and perhaps the best-known voice in Australian media, Richard Morecroft, delivers a narrative softly linking a tale of the dignity of the human soul researched and written by local playwright Pauline Wright.
Latitude 33 is to be premiered on Saturday 26 June 2010, the weekend preceding the 5 Lands Walk, at Avoca Beach Picture Theatre, commencing at 8pm. Prior to this there will be a smoking ceremony on the beach hosted by the Aboriginal community, followed by South African Tapas (including Sth African wine) available at the Sands Café. As 8pm draws closer move across to the theatre, have a glass of champagne and enjoy the show. After the performance there will be a communal campfire on the beach, once again hosted by Aboriginal community.
