An exhibition of some of the world’s top nature photographs by acclaimed US-based National Geographic photographer, Frans Lanting, is in its final days in Australia. An array of Frans’ amazing images are on display at the Ken Duncan Gallery on the Central Coast for just one more week before the exhibition makes its way back home to America.
Among the images on display are three classics which have recently been chosen for inclusion in a unique collection that represents the 40 most important nature photographs of all time.
The photos were selected for the gala international "Green Auction" by Christie's in New York, which was conducted on April 22 – the 40th anniversary of Earth Day. Proceeds from the auction benefited leading conservation organisations, including Conservation International, Oceana, and the Natural Resources Defence Council.
The three Frans Lanting images selected for the collection are Water Lilies, Botswana,1989, Giant Tortoises at Dawn, Galápagos Islands, 1984, and Twilight of the Giants, Botswana, 1989.
The collection of 40 images represents a wide range of styles and genres and spans more than 100 years of the history of photography. The images were chosen by members of the International League of Conservation Photographers (iLCP), a fellowship of the world's top professional conservation photographers. More than 100 photographers and editors associated with the iLCP nominated images they considered to be the best, based on factors such as aesthetics, uniqueness, historical and scientific significance, and contribution to conservation efforts.
The 25 photographers represented in this prestigious collection of images range from Ansel Adams and Edward Weston to William Anders, the Apollo 8 astronaut who made the iconic image of the Earth rising over the Moon. Frans Lanting visited Australia in March to run his first-ever Australian workshops and launch an exhibition, hosted by world-renowned Australian landscape photographer Ken Duncan. The hugely popular exhibition has travelled to several of Duncan’s Galleries over the past month and now, due to high demand, is back on display at his Erina Heights Gallery (414 The Entrance Road) only until Monday, May 31.
The Gallery is open from 10am to 5pm daily and all Frans Lanting images are available for purchase.
